Pakistan Cracks Down Ahead of PTI’s Nationwide Protests Demanding Imran Khan’s Release
Islamabad and Rawalpindi go into lockdown with mass arrests and restrictions as PTI plans demonstrations to mark two years of Khan’s imprisonment
05-08-2025Heightened security, sweeping arrests, and restrictions on public gatherings have gripped Islamabad and Rawalpindi as Pakistan prepares for renewed protests demanding the release of jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
In anticipation of demonstrations marking the second anniversary of Khan’s arrest on August 5, 2023, authorities have enforced Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), effectively banning assemblies of more than four people in the twin cities until August 10. Over 300 supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have reportedly been arrested during overnight raids, as per party officials.
Adiala Jail Under Tight Watch
Adiala Jail, where Khan is currently incarcerated, has become a focal point of security efforts. More than 4,000 security personnel have been deployed around the facility. Surveillance teams and riot control units are stationed across key urban areas, with police patrols closely monitoring the situation.
On Tuesday, several PTI demonstrators were detained in Lahore after taking to the streets in support of their leader, according to Dawn. PTI alleges that raids on the homes of its leaders and activists have intensified in recent days, with dozens picked up to stifle the growing dissent.
Protests in Pakistan and Abroad
The PTI has called for mass demonstrations both within Pakistan and internationally — particularly across the US and Europe — under the banner of Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan. Protests have already erupted in cities like Lahore and Buner, where demonstrators waved party flags and chanted slogans demanding Khan’s release.
Khan, who was jailed in the Toshakhana case involving the alleged illegal sale of state gifts, continues to face additional legal battles, including terror-related cases linked to the violent events of May 9, 2023. His supporters argue that his imprisonment is politically motivated and part of a larger plan to sideline him after he was ousted through a no-confidence motion in 2022 and allegedly blocked from returning to power in the disputed 2024 elections.
Government’s Firm Stance
The Shehbaz Sharif-led federal government has condemned the protests as an attempt to incite disorder. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned that authorities will respond decisively to any acts of unrest. Islamabad’s Deputy Commissioner also issued a statement warning of immediate arrests for anyone found violating the imposed restrictions.
PTI, meanwhile, has accused the country’s military leadership, including Army Chief General Asim Munir, of colluding with the civilian government to keep Khan behind bars — a claim denied by both the government and the army.
Over the past two years, PTI has launched multiple protest movements calling for Khan’s release. A major march to Islamabad in November 2024 was forcefully dispersed by law enforcement, with PTI alleging that 12 of its members were killed during the crackdown.
