A day after a Russian missile strike destroyed a children's hospital in Kyiv, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives during a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting marked Modi's first visit to Russia in two years and the first since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

During the meeting, PM Modi addressed the invasion directly, emphasizing the tragedy of innocent children being killed. He stated, "If innocent children are murdered; if innocent children die, it is heart-wrenching."

Reflecting on their earlier discussions about Ukraine, PM Modi conveyed the expectations of the Global South for peace and stability, reiterating that "no solution is possible on the battlefield." He assured President Putin that India is committed to supporting peace efforts, emphasizing that peace is crucial for future generations. "Peace talks do not succeed amidst bombs, guns, and bullets," he said in Hindi.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra later highlighted that PM Modi was clear and categorical in his concern and regret over the loss of innocent lives, particularly children, due to the recent attacks. Kwatra noted, "The solution to this conflict is not to be found on the battlefield and that it is possible only through dialogue and diplomacy."

Economic cooperation, particularly in energy, trade, manufacturing, and fertilizers, was a key topic during the meeting. Despite Western criticism, India has emerged as a significant buyer of Russian oil, providing a crucial export market for Moscow amid European sanctions.

In his opening remarks, PM Modi expressed confidence in the strengthening of India-Russia ties. He acknowledged the cooperation in the energy sector, noting that it helped stabilize the global market and insulate Indian citizens from fuel shortages. "The world has to accept that the India-Russia fuel agreement helped, indirectly, stabilize the global market," Modi told Putin.

Addressing the issue of terrorism, PM Modi condemned all forms of terrorism and pointed out that India has been grappling with this challenge for around 40 years. He mentioned the recent string of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir as a testament to the ongoing threat.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the resilience of India in the face of global challenges over the past five years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and various conflicts. He emphasized that the strong ties with Russia have helped India navigate shortages of food, fuel, and fertilizers, ensuring that Indian farmers did not face problems.
