PM Modi Jabs Sonia Gandhi with 'Remote Control' Remark, Opposition Stages Walkout
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lambasted Congress and the opposition during his speech in the Rajya Sabha, leading to a walkout by opposition MPs
03-07-2024Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, suggesting that previous governments operated on "autopilot" and "remote control," during a debate on the Motion of Thanks on the President's address in the Rajya Sabha. Modi accused the opposition of avoiding hard work and highlighted attempts to downplay the NDA's victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
Modi emphasized that a government has retained power for three consecutive terms after 60 years and claimed the NDA has 20 more years ahead. Opposition MPs walked out during his speech, protesting that Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar did not allow Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge to speak. Modi accused the opposition of spreading falsehoods and avoiding listening to the truth.
The Prime Minister expressed surprise at those who opposed Constitution Day but recently waved the Constitution in Parliament. He recounted his initiative to celebrate November 26 as Constitution Day, noting the opposition's past objections. Modi asserted that the public trusts the NDA to safeguard the Constitution and criticized Congress for constitutional amendments during the Emergency.
Targeting the opposition, Modi condemned their silence on incidents of violence against women in West Bengal and accused Congress of having an anti-OBC mindset. He suggested that Congress uses Dalit leaders as scapegoats in inevitable election defeats to protect the Gandhi family. Modi praised Kharge's loyalty to his party, noting how he shielded the blame for electoral losses.
Addressing the NEET-UG paper leak, Modi assured strict action against those undermining the future of the youth and granted investigative agencies full freedom to pursue corruption. He also touched on the ethnic violence in Manipur, highlighting the government's efforts to restore normalcy and criticizing the opposition for politicizing the issue. Modi pointed out that over 500 arrests and 11,000 FIRs have been made in Manipur, asserting that the region will eventually reject opposition politics.
The ethnic violence in Manipur since May 2023 has resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands displaced. Modi faced criticism for not visiting the state, a point leveraged by the opposition against him.
