Pope Francis Battles Critical Health Issues Amid Global Prayers
Pope Francis remains in critical condition due to pneumonia and lung complications, with global faith communities offering prayers for his recovery
24-02-2025Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he continues to fight pneumonia and a severe lung infection, according to the Vatican. Despite his illness, the 88-year-old pontiff remains alert and responsive, even attending Mass from his hospital room.
The Vatican reported that the Pope had not experienced further respiratory distress since Saturday night but still requires high levels of supplemental oxygen. Blood tests have detected early-stage kidney failure, though doctors assured that the condition remains manageable.
Medical experts highlighted the complexity of his condition, stating that his fragile health and pre-existing lung disease make his recovery uncertain. The Vatican has maintained a cautious stance on his prognosis, indicating that the effectiveness of treatments will take time to assess.
Messages of support have poured in from around the world, including from his home country, Argentina, and religious leaders across faiths. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, extended prayers for the Pope’s recovery, while schoolchildren in Rome sent get-well messages to his hospital. In New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating that Catholics worldwide were united in prayer "at the bedside of a dying father."
Pope Francis had been scheduled to lead Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday but was unable to do so. Archbishop Rino Fisichella presided over the service in his place, offering special prayers for the Pope. A pre-written message from Francis reassured the faithful that he was following his treatment with confidence and asked for continued prayers.
Doctors have warned that sepsis, a life-threatening infection of the bloodstream, remains a potential risk, although there have been no confirmed signs of it. Over the weekend, the Pope developed anemia and a low platelet count, requiring blood transfusions and specialized treatment to improve oxygen levels in his blood.
His hospitalization followed a prolonged struggle with bronchitis, which worsened into a severe bacterial, viral, and fungal lung infection. His treatment includes corticosteroids, antibiotics, and oxygen support, with strict medical supervision.
In recent years, Pope Francis has taken steps that suggest he was aware of his advancing age and health challenges. He revised the papal funeral rites, opting for a simpler ceremony and expressing his wish to be buried outside the Vatican. Additionally, he appointed 21 new cardinals in 2023, ensuring a strong presence of younger members in the College of Cardinals.
Earlier this month, despite his illness, Francis extended the term of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, 91, as the Dean of the College of Cardinals, along with Vice-Dean Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, 81. These figures play critical roles in the transition of leadership within the Catholic Church.
As the Pope continues to battle his illness, the world watches closely, united in prayers for his health and the future of the Church.
