Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, is now under scrutiny for possible involvement in a nexus linked to the death of a 31-year-old doctor, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI informed a Kolkata court today that Dr. Ghosh was in communication with Tala Police Station's officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, after the doctor was found dead on the hospital premises. The agency suspects a conspiracy that it seeks to uncover.
The CBI arrested Abhijit Mondal on charges of tampering with evidence in the case, which has drawn nationwide attention due to its nature as a suspected rape-murder. Dr. Ghosh, already arrested earlier in a financial irregularities case, now also faces charges of evidence tampering. Both men appeared in court today and were remanded to CBI custody for two days, with the case set for another hearing on September 17.
During the court proceedings, CBI's counsel revealed that call records show communication between Mondal and Dr. Ghosh after the doctor's body was discovered, raising suspicion of a larger conspiracy. "There may be a nexus, and we need to confront both of them to uncover the truth," the CBI's counsel said. The counsel clarified that the agency is not targeting Mondal as a police officer, but as a suspect.
The case has seen questions from both the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court regarding the delay in filing an FIR, which took place over 14 hours after the body was discovered. The courts also criticized Dr. Ghosh, who was then head of the hospital, for not lodging a police complaint that could have initiated the FIR process sooner. The CBI argued that the incident was downplayed as a suicide, and that Dr. Ghosh had failed to handle it properly, alleging his involvement in a conspiracy to cover up the assault.
In defense, Mondal's lawyer contended that the charges against him were unclear, arguing, "This is at best a case of alleged dereliction of duty. A departmental inquiry could have addressed it, but there is no basis for an arrest."
The CBI clarified that while Mondal is not being accused directly of the rape and murder, he may have played a role in covering it up. These are the agency's first arrests in the ongoing month-long investigation, which was handed over to them by the Calcutta High Court. Kolkata Police had previously arrested Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, in connection with the case, with the CBI later taking him into custody.
The Trinamool Congress, facing public criticism over the case, has questioned the progress of the CBI’s investigation since it took over the case.
