An IndiGo aircraft was evacuated on Tuesday afternoon at Chandigarh’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport after smoke filled the cabin due to a burning power bank carried by a passenger.

The flight, which had arrived from Hyderabad with 198 passengers and six crew members onboard, landed around 3:29 pm. While the aircraft was taxiing toward its designated parking bay, a traveller informed the cabin crew that his power bank had ignited, reportedly following an internal malfunction.

Crew members immediately responded and used fire extinguishers to put out the flames. Although the fire was contained quickly, smoke had already spread inside the cabin, prompting the activation of emergency safety procedures.

As a precautionary measure, the aircraft was evacuated. Emergency exits were opened and inflatable slides were deployed to allow passengers to disembark swiftly. During the evacuation, a woman suffered an ankle injury.

An Indian Air Force fire vehicle reached the aircraft, but by then the blaze had already been controlled.

In an official statement, IndiGo confirmed that the incident occurred after the aircraft had come to a halt following landing. The airline said the issue involved a passenger’s personal electronic device catching fire. All travellers were escorted safely to the terminal, where assistance was provided.

The airline also said the aircraft would undergo detailed inspection before being cleared for further operations.

Sources from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation indicated that the power bank was placed inside a pouch in the seat pocket when it ignited. Crew members reportedly used two fire extinguishers and deployed all six emergency slides during the evacuation.

Authorities are expected to review the incident as part of standard aviation safety procedures.
