Prateek Yadav Dies of Pulmonary Embolism; Autopsy Reveals Prior Injuries
Post-mortem findings from Lucknow confirm cardiac arrest linked to a severe lung clot, with multiple pre-death injuries also documented
14-05-2026Prateek Yadav, half-brother of Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, passed away due to cardiorespiratory failure triggered by a massive pulmonary thromboembolism, according to the autopsy conducted at King George's Medical University in Lucknow.
Medical experts stated that a pulmonary thromboembolism occurs when a blood clot—often originating in the legs—travels to and blocks an artery in the lungs, leading to life-threatening complications. The report mentioned that the heart and clot material have been preserved for further microscopic examination, while internal samples have been retained for chemical analysis.
The post-mortem also recorded six antemortem injuries—meaning they occurred before death. These were located on the chest, beneath the right arm, right forearm, right elbow area, and left wrist. According to the findings, three of the injuries were estimated to be nearly a week old, while the remaining were approximately a day old.
Yadav, who had reportedly been dealing with liver and lung-related ailments, had previously sought treatment at Medanta Hospital. On the morning of his death, family members rushed him to a hospital around 6:15 am. However, doctors confirmed he had already passed away before arrival.
Dr. G.C. Gupta, Director of Lucknow’s Civil Hospital, stated that standard medical procedures were carried out upon his arrival and authorities were subsequently informed.
At the time of the incident, his wife, BJP leader Aparna Yadav, was reportedly out of the city.
In a message shared on social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav expressed grief over his half-brother’s demise, offering prayers for the departed soul.
Born in 1988, Prateek Yadav largely stayed away from frontline politics, focusing instead on fitness and his ventures in the real estate sector. Though there were discussions within the Samajwadi Party in 2012 about fielding him from Azamgarh in the 2014 general elections, the plan did not move forward.
He married Aparna Bisht in 2011. Unlike him, Aparna actively entered politics and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2022, citing admiration for the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Earlier this year, Prateek had publicly spoken about personal differences within the family but later announced reconciliation with his wife in January.
His untimely passing has drawn attention not only due to his political lineage but also because of the medical and personal circumstances surrounding his death.
