President Announces Major Gubernatorial Appointments Across India

28-07-2024In a significant reshuffle of gubernatorial positions, the Rashtrapati Bhavan has announced several key appointments and changes. Lakshman Prasad Acharya has been appointed as the Governor of Assam with additional responsibility for Manipur, replacing Gulab Chand Kataria. Kataria has been named the new Governor of Punjab, succeeding Banwarilal Purohit, who resigned from his position. Kataria will also serve as the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Banwarilal Purohit's resignation as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh. Acharya, who was serving as the Governor of Sikkim, will now take on his new roles in Assam and Manipur.
Veteran BJP leader Om Prakash Mathur has been appointed as the new Governor of Sikkim, replacing Acharya. Additionally, Jharkhand Governor C P Radhakrishnan, who held additional charge of Telangana, has been named the Governor of Maharashtra, taking over from Ramesh Bais.
Former Union Labour and Employment Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar has been appointed as the new Governor of Jharkhand, succeeding Radhakrishnan. Jishnu Dev Varma, former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, will become the Governor of Telangana.
K Kailashnathan, a former IAS officer and trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. Kailashnathan recently stepped down as the Chief Principal Secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel after more than a decade in the role.
Haribhau Kisanrao Bagde, a senior BJP leader from Maharashtra, will be the new Governor of Rajasthan, succeeding Kalraj Mishra. Former Lok Sabha member from Assam, Ramen Deka, has been appointed as the Governor of Chhattisgarh, while C H Vijayashankar, a former Lok Sabha member from Mysore in Karnataka, will take on the role of Governor of Meghalaya.
These appointments will take effect upon the respective officials assuming their new roles, as stated in the official communique.
