President Droupadi Murmu has announced a reshuffle involving governors in six states, confirming Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as the full-time Governor of Tamil Nadu and transferring Om Prakash Mathur from Sikkim to Keralam.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan announced the changes on Monday. Braj Mohan Ram has been named Governor of Odisha, Sudha Yadav will take charge in Karnataka, Dhal Singh Bisen has been appointed Governor of Uttarakhand, and Dushyant Gautam will move to Sikkim.
The appointments will become effective once the new governors formally assume office.
Arlekar Confirmed As Tamil Nadu Governor
Arlekar had been handling the responsibilities of Tamil Nadu Governor since March, when his predecessor, R N Ravi, was appointed Governor of West Bengal. The latest decision formally confirms him in the role.
A former Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Arlekar has previously served as Governor of Himachal Pradesh and Bihar. He now moves from Keralam to take up his full-time assignment in Tamil Nadu.
Mathur will succeed Arlekar in Keralam. The senior BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan was appointed Governor of Sikkim in July 2024.
Four States Get New Governors
The reshuffle also brings changes to the gubernatorial offices in Odisha, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.
Odisha: Braj Mohan Ram, a former Lok Sabha MP from Palamu, will replace Hari Babu Kambhampati, who assumed office in January 2025.
Karnataka: Sudha Yadav, a former BJP MP from Mahendragarh and former member of the National Commission for Backward Classes, has been appointed in place of Thaawarchand Gehlot. She will become the state's second woman Governor, following V S Ramadevi, who served from 1999 to 2002.
Uttarakhand: Dhal Singh Bisen, a former Lok Sabha member who represented Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh, will succeed retired Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh.
Sikkim: Dushyant Gautam, a former BJP national general secretary and former Rajya Sabha MP, will take over from Mathur.
The presidential announcement did not specify new assignments for Kambhampati, Gehlot or Gurmit Singh.
