A day after creating a stir in Parliament with a handbag displaying the word “Palestine,” Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra appeared to send another strong message, arriving with a new bag highlighting the plight of minorities in Bangladesh. The accessory featured the slogan: “Stand with Bangladeshi Hindus and Christians,” referencing recent attacks on minority communities in the neighboring country.

Addressing the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, Priyanka Gandhi urged the government to raise the issue of violence against minorities in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels. “The government should engage with the Bangladesh government and ensure the safety of Hindus and Christians who are suffering. We must support those who are in pain,” she said.

Opposition Protests and Political Fallout

Priyanka Gandhi’s symbolic gesture seemed to inspire other Opposition MPs, who joined her by carrying similar bags as a mark of protest. However, the controversy surrounding her earlier “Palestine” bag and her meeting with Palestinian envoy Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer remained a focal point for the BJP.

Senior BJP leaders criticized the Congress leader for prioritizing foreign issues over domestic concerns. Union Minister Anurag Thakur questioned, “Why has she been silent on issues of Bangladeshi Hindus until now? This is the Indian Parliament, where leaders should focus on the concerns of 140 crore Indians.”

BJP IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya accused Priyanka Gandhi of “communal virtue signaling” and called her move “crass posturing.” He further stated on social media: “Priyanka Vadra’s antics are tone-deaf. Her bag reflects misplaced priorities under the guise of fighting patriarchy.”

In response to the BJP’s criticism, Priyanka Gandhi hit back, dismissing their remarks as “stupid.” She urged the government to act rather than resort to blame games. “Tell them to take concrete steps to address atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh and stop making empty statements,” she asserted.

Linking India’s Past to Present

Drawing on historical references, Priyanka Gandhi reminded Parliament of India’s intervention during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War under her grandmother and then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She emphasized India’s longstanding commitment to democracy and human rights, stating, “India stood alone in 1971 for principles and justice. Indira ji led the fight against atrocities, and it was our army and our people who took a stand. These are the values that make India great.”

India’s Official Position on Palestine and Bangladesh

India maintains a consistent stance advocating for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently reiterated India’s commitment to a “sovereign, independent, and viable Palestinian state.” Since the start of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, India has provided significant humanitarian aid, including medicines and financial contributions to support Palestinian refugees.

At the same time, India remains deeply invested in its strategic and cultural ties with Bangladesh. Concerns over recent attacks on minorities following the political shift in Dhaka have prompted calls for increased diplomatic engagement.

Priyanka Gandhi’s symbolic actions in Parliament continue to generate debate, with supporters hailing her for raising critical issues and critics accusing her of political opportunism.
