On Monday, the Indian Mission in Ottawa expressed disappointment following an incident in Brampton, where pro-Khalistan supporters disrupted a consular event outside a Hindu temple. The mission attributed the violence to “anti-India elements” and expressed concerns over the interference in regular consular services, which it noted are organized in cooperation with local partners to address the needs of Indian nationals.

The mission voiced particular worry about the safety of attendees, explaining that the disturbances interfered with essential consular functions designed to support Indian citizens abroad. Despite these challenges, the mission reported issuing over 1,000 life certificates to applicants from both Indian and Canadian backgrounds.

The incident took place outside the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, where videos shared online showed a group with pro-Khalistan flags confronting individuals outside the temple. According to reports, the demonstration, marking the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, escalated into violence.

The episode has intensified tensions between India and Canada, whose relations have been strained over the handling of Khalistani extremism. While India has urged Canada to take stricter measures against these elements, Canadian authorities have pushed back, alleging that India is targeting Khalistani figures within Canada. This diplomatic rift has since deepened.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the incident, labeling the violence "unacceptable." He emphasized that all Canadians should have the freedom to practice their religion safely, commending the police for their prompt response to protect the community and investigate the event.
