In a dramatic turn of events, thousands of protesters in Bangladesh stormed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka on Monday, shortly after she resigned and fled the country. The demonstrators looted, vandalized, and raided rooms throughout the residence, creating scenes of chaos and jubilation.

Visuals from the capital showed crowds celebrating the fall of the Hasina government, with many shouting slogans and making victory signs. Protesters were seen in the drawing rooms of Ganabhaban, carrying away televisions, chairs, and tables from one of the nation's most secure buildings. Inside the residence, agitators were spotted feasting on fish and biryani from the kitchens and refrigerators, while some even lay on the Prime Minister's bed.

The protesters also targeted portraits of Hasina and her father, Bangladesh's independence leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, damaging and attempting to destroy them. In a symbolic act, jubilant demonstrators removed Hasina's portraits from government offices and other buildings.

The unrest, which began over a month ago as protests against a government job quota system, has escalated into one of the most violent outbreaks in decades. The protesters demanded the removal of Hasina's Awami League government, which has been in power for over 15 years.

Similar scenes of unrest were witnessed in Sri Lanka in July 2022, when anti-government protesters stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's residence, looting the place and recovering large sums of money.

In light of the violence in Bangladesh, security forces have been placed on high alert, and train services to border areas have been suspended. As the situation remains tense, the interim government led by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has promised to investigate the killings and restore order.
