Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi for the 18th BRICS Summit accompanied by a security operation befitting one of the world's most heavily protected heads of state. Among the most recognisable elements of his overseas convoy is his customised Aurus Senat limousine.

While leaders frequently travel abroad in their official aircraft, Putin also takes his own presidential vehicle with him. The heavily fortified limousine is transported as part of his overseas security arrangements and is used for official movements.

The Aurus Senat gained additional attention in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled alongside Putin in the same vehicle during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China last year.

What is the Aurus Senat?

The Aurus Senat is a Russian-made luxury limousine developed specifically under the country's programme for high-end government vehicles.

The model emerged from the Kortezh project, which was launched to create a domestic fleet of luxury and protected vehicles for Russia's senior leadership. The development involved Russian automotive interests, the NAMI state research institute, Sollers JSC and UAE-based Tawazun Holding.

First unveiled in 2018, the Senat's styling draws inspiration from historic Soviet state limousines, including the ZIS-110.

A civilian version is also produced, although in very limited numbers. The standard model has been reported to cost around 18 million rubles, equivalent to roughly Rs 2.5 crore.

Built for protection

Putin's presidential Senat is substantially different from the civilian model. The vehicle is extensively armoured and engineered to provide protection against serious security threats.

The limousine is part of Putin's larger motorcade, which can include roughly two dozen vehicles. On international trips, the presidential car is brought along to maintain the same level of protection and operational control used by his security team in Russia.

Its construction is designed to withstand both ballistic and explosive threats, making the vehicle effectively a mobile protective shell around the Russian president.

Engine and performance

The Aurus Senat is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 combined with a hybrid system. The powertrain produces around 598 hp and 880 Nm of torque and is paired with a nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The limousine measures approximately 5.63 metres in length, 2 metres in width and 1.7 metres in height. It has a 3.3-metre wheelbase.

Despite its substantial size and armour, the Senat can reach a top speed of around 160 kmph. Its reported 0-100 kmph acceleration time is approximately nine seconds.

Luxury inside the security shell

The Senat combines its protective construction with the features expected from a presidential limousine.

Its cabin uses premium leather and wood finishes, alongside modern infotainment and electronic systems. The vehicle is also designed to function across extreme climatic conditions.

Driver-assistance and safety technologies reported for the vehicle include adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, traction control and advanced braking systems.

The result is a limousine designed to serve two very different purposes at once: provide a high level of protection for Russia's president while also functioning as a sophisticated luxury vehicle.

For Putin, the Aurus Senat is therefore more than a mode of transport. Its presence in New Delhi highlights the extensive security arrangements that accompany the Russian president wherever he travels.
