Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, visited Chooralmala in Wayanad, Kerala, to assess the aftermath of recent landslides. During their visit, they met with affected residents and evaluated the damage.

In a media briefing, Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "This is a terrible tragedy for Wayanad, Kerala, and the entire nation. We are here to witness the situation firsthand. It is heartbreaking to see so many people who have lost their loved ones and homes. We are committed to assisting the survivors and ensuring they receive the help they deserve. Many are requesting relocation, and there is much work to be done. I extend my gratitude to all those involved in the relief efforts, including doctors, nurses, administrative personnel, and volunteers."

He added, "This tragedy reminds me of the pain I felt when my father passed away. Here, people have lost not just a family member, but sometimes their entire families. We owe these people our respect and compassion. The entire nation's focus is now on Wayanad."

The landslides, triggered by heavy rains, have resulted in 256 deaths and extensive damage in Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages. Over 200 individuals have sustained injuries, and the Army has rescued approximately 1,000 people. Rescue operations, now in their third day, continue with 220 people still missing.

A Command and Control Centre has been established in Kozhikode by the Army to coordinate Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts. Kerala Health Minister Veena George announced the deployment of 1,500 Army personnel for the ongoing rescue operations, including forensic surgeons to assist in the process.

The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted more rainfall for Wayanad and neighboring districts in the coming days. A red alert for heavy rain has been issued for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod districts.

In response to the disaster, several countries, including the US, Russia, China, and Iran, have extended their condolences over the loss of lives due to the landslides.
