The Rajasthan High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the tragic LPG tanker explosion in Jaipur, which claimed 14 lives and left several others injured. A single-judge bench, led by Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand, issued notices to the central and state governments, urging them to ensure proper compensation for the victims and their families. The matter has been listed for further hearing on January 10, 2025.
The incident occurred on the Jaipur-Ajmer highway when an LPG tanker collided with a truck, triggering a massive fire that destroyed at least 37 vehicles and injured over 30 people, many of whom remain in critical condition. The blast has raised serious concerns about road and public safety, prompting the court to call for measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
The Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety has also taken note of the incident, directing Rajasthan's Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report by January 20. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the accident, including examining the condition of the road where the collision occurred.
In response, the Rajasthan government announced an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to the injured. Additionally, the central government has offered ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of those who lost their lives.
The tragedy has sparked a broader conversation about road safety measures and accountability, with the court emphasizing the need for long-term solutions to prevent such catastrophic accidents in public spaces.
