Rajpal Yadav Surrenders to Tihar Jail in Cheque Bounce Case, Opens Up About Financial Crisis
The comedian spoke candidly about his money troubles before turning himself in after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him more time
10-02-2026Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail in connection with a cheque-bounce case, shortly after the Delhi High Court declined his request for an extension to comply with its earlier order. Ahead of his surrender, the 54-year-old actor shared an emotional account of his financial struggles, saying he had exhausted all options.
Known for his memorable comic performances in films such as Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama, and Dhol, Yadav admitted that he lacked the funds to repay the disputed amount and felt he had no support system to fall back on. In earlier media interactions, he expressed that he was facing the situation alone and could not rely on friends or colleagues for financial help.
The legal case stems from a loan taken in 2010 from a Delhi-based businessman, reportedly to finance Yadav’s directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata. The case, filed in 2018, alleges that Yadav and his wife failed to repay nearly ₹5 crore. Despite multiple court summons and previous custody during the case proceedings, repayment was not completed.
After missing an earlier surrender deadline, the High Court rejected further leniency and directed immediate compliance, stressing that no individual should receive special treatment based on profession or public status. The court underscored that legal orders must be respected and that equality before the law applies to all.
Tihar Jail authorities confirmed that Yadav presented himself to prison officials shortly after the ruling.
The situation has drawn reactions from the film industry. Actor Sonu Sood publicly voiced his support, encouraging producers and colleagues to stand by Yadav during this difficult phase. He suggested that offering professional opportunities could help the actor regain stability while preserving dignity.
Rajpal Yadav has had a long and diverse career spanning more than two decades, appearing in nearly 150 films across multiple Indian languages. His recent projects include Baby John and Interrogation, with upcoming appearances in Priyadarshan’s Bhoot Bangla and the ensemble film Welcome to The Jungle.
