Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav will spend at least four additional nights in Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court postponed his bail hearing to Monday, February 16. The court criticized Yadav for attempting to reopen the case despite failing to honour his previous commitments.
The High Court also issued a notice to Murli Projects Company, which had provided a Rs 5 crore loan to Yadav in 2010 for his directorial debut Ata Pata Lapataa, requesting the company’s response to the actor’s bail plea. The case concerns nearly Rs 9 crore that Yadav allegedly has not repaid. During the hearing, Yadav’s legal team requested more time, saying they needed instructions from him regarding repayment.
Yadav informed the court that he needed to attend his niece’s wedding in Shahjahanpur later this month. He has been in judicial custody since February 5.
Court Reprimands Actor
Justice Swarnakanta Sharma sharply criticized Yadav, noting that his imprisonment resulted from his own actions rather than the court’s orders. The judge emphasized that Yadav had repeatedly acknowledged his liability.
“When the offence has already been admitted, suspension of the sentence is not applicable,” the judge stated.
Justice Sharma also remarked on Yadav’s long history of promises to repay the loan, which were repeatedly broken over the years. The actor was sentenced to six months in jail for failing to return the amount, which had grown to nearly Rs 9 crore. On multiple occasions, Yadav had assured the court he would clear the dues but failed to follow through.
Reports indicate that after the case drew attention, several figures from Bollywood and politics have stepped forward to offer financial assistance to help settle the outstanding loan.
