Ranveer Singh Issues Apology After Kantara Mimicry Sparks Cultural Backlash
Ranveer Singh has apologised after his mimicry of a culturally significant Kantara scene at IFFI sparked criticism for misrepresenting sacred Daiva traditions
02-12-2025Actor Ranveer Singh has issued a public apology after facing backlash for imitating a key sequence from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1 during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa. The moment drew sharp reactions as Shetty himself was seated in the audience, and Singh’s portrayal — along with his reference to daivas as “ghosts” — was criticised as disrespectful.
On Tuesday morning, Singh posted a clarification on Instagram Stories.
He wrote that his performance was meant as appreciation, not mockery.
“My aim was to showcase how extraordinary Rishabh’s acting was in that scene. As a fellow performer, I understand the dedication required to deliver something so powerful, and I truly admire his craft,” he said.
Acknowledging the criticism, Singh added, “I have always held the cultures, beliefs, and traditions of our country in high regard. If my act unintentionally hurt anyone, I offer my heartfelt apology.”
The controversy arose when Singh recreated Shetty’s Daiva transformation from the film’s climax on stage and praised the actor directly. He said, “Rishab, your performance was phenomenal — especially the moment when the female spirit (Chamundi daiva) embodies you. That shot stayed with me.”
Although Shetty appeared amused during the event, online reactions told a different story. Many social media users argued that Singh’s comments misrepresented daivas, which are revered as divine guardians rather than spirits or ghosts, and therefore trivialised the cultural significance behind the performance.
The debate escalated further when additional clips emerged of Shetty cautioning Singh at the venue not to imitate him — a moment that intensified criticism.
The incident has triggered wider conversations about cultural sensitivity and the responsibility celebrities carry when referencing traditional art forms, especially on prominent platforms. Singh’s apology has been widely shared, with reactions split between those accepting his explanation and those who feel the issue warranted greater care.
Rishab Shetty has not yet released an official statement about the episode. The controversy comes as Singh gets ready for the premiere of his upcoming film Dhurandhar, slated for release later this week.
