Relief from Sweltering Heat Ahead for Northwestern and Central India, IMD Forecasts
IMD anticipates relief from scorching temperatures in northwestern and central India in three days due to an approaching western disturbance
27-05-2024The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Monday that relief from the scorching heat is on the horizon for northwestern and central parts of India, expected in about three days. This respite is attributed to an incoming western disturbance, coupled with moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the IMD chief, emphasized the likelihood of thunderstorm activity in northwest India and rainfall in the western Himalayan region as part of this weather change.
Mohapatra further mentioned that June is anticipated to witness normal to above-normal minimum temperatures across most parts of the country. Notably, Rajasthan and Gujarat experienced an alarming number of heat wave days, ranging from nine to twelve, with temperatures soaring between 45 to 50 degrees Celsius. Similarly, areas including Delhi, south Haryana, southwest UP, and Punjab recorded five to seven heat wave days, with maximum temperatures ranging from 44 to 48 degrees Celsius.
The IMD's forecast comes alongside its monsoon prediction, which hints at above-normal monsoon conditions for central India in the year 2024. The nationwide outlook suggests that the entire country is likely to receive above-average rainfall during this monsoon season.
