Rhea Chakraborty has recently returned to the spotlight, not only for her re-entry into the entertainment world with a podcast but also due to her involvement in an ongoing investigation. She, along with several other prominent figures, has been summoned by the Delhi Police in connection to a large-scale app-based scam. This scam, allegedly worth around Rs 500 crore, involved the promotion of a fraudulent app called HiBox, which falsely promised high investment returns.
The scam gained traction as celebrities and influencers with large social media followings endorsed the app, leading many users to invest substantial amounts of money. Among those questioned alongside Rhea are comedian Bharti Singh and YouTuber Elvish Yadav. The investigation was prompted by numerous complaints from victims who claimed they were misled into investing in the app after seeing promotional content from their favorite influencers.
According to Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO), HiBox was part of a well-planned scheme that assured investors daily returns ranging from 1% to 5%, with monthly returns promised to be between 30% to 90%. More than 30,000 individuals were reportedly duped by the app. While the app initially paid out profits in the early months following its launch in February, by July, it began withholding payments, citing technical and legal challenges.
Several influencers, including Saurav Joshi, Abhishek Malhan, Harsh Limbachiya, and others, have received legal notices regarding their involvement with the app. Meanwhile, the main accused, Sivaram from Chennai, has been arrested, with authorities seizing Rs 18 crore from his accounts as part of the ongoing investigation.
