Rishi Sunak Reflects on Defeat and Resigns Outside Downing Street
A somber Rishi Sunak, acknowledging public "anger and disappointment," resigned as Prime Minister following the Conservative Party's defeat to Labour in the UK elections
05-07-2024A somber Rishi Sunak, grappling with the weight of his defeat to the Labour Party in the recent UK elections, described the results as a manifestation of the public's "anger and disappointment."
With a weary expression, Sunak delivered his resignation speech outside 10 Downing Street, his soon-to-be former residence. His eyes, once filled with ambition, now reflected the strain of the tumultuous 20 months he spent in office.
Apologizing to the British public for not meeting their expectations, Sunak avoided eye contact with the media and the crowd, instead looking downwards in reflection. "This is a difficult day," he said with a sorrowful tone. "You have sent a clear message, and yours is the only judgement that matters."
Earlier in the day, while delivering a speech after retaining his parliamentary seat in Richmond and Northallerton, Sunak was interrupted by prankster Niko Omilana, who held up an "L" sign behind him, referring to Sunak as a "loser." Omilana, who stood as an independent candidate in the North Yorkshire constituency, garnered 160 votes. On social media, he taunted Sunak with the message, "Hold this, L Rishi, your time is up."
Taking full responsibility for the Conservative Party's defeat, Sunak expressed his regret to the party's candidates and campaigners. "To all the Conservative candidates and campaigners who worked tirelessly, but without success, I'm sorry that we could not deliver what your efforts deserved." With his wife Akshata Murty by his side, Sunak took his final walk as Prime Minister, leaving Downing Street for the last time.
