Rohit Sharma Clashes with Umpires Over Bad Light in 1st Test
India captain Rohit Sharma clashed with umpires over stopping play due to bad light as New Zealand chased a 107-run target on Day 4 of the first Test in Bengaluru
19-10-2024India captain Rohit Sharma engaged in an intense conversation with on-field umpire Michael Gough on Day 4 of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, urging him not to call off play due to bad light. Sharma, keen for India to strike early in New Zealand’s chase of a 107-run target, was visibly frustrated when the umpires halted play. Virat Kohli also joined the discussion, attempting to persuade the officials to continue the match.
Despite their appeals, the umpires ruled the light conditions unsafe, citing poor visibility even with the floodlights on. After using the light meter, the decision stood, causing visible frustration among the Indian players, as their momentum was disrupted. Moments later, dark clouds gathered, and the ground staff hurriedly covered the pitch, anticipating further rain delays.
Earlier in the match, India had suffered a shocking collapse, being bowled out for just 46 in their first innings. However, Sarfaraz Khan's remarkable 150-run knock and Rishabh Pant's blazing 99 helped India fight back in the second innings. But after the tea break, India's remaining wickets fell quickly, leaving them bowled out in 99.3 overs. The dismissals of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj put India on the back foot.
As Day 4 ended prematurely, India was left to defend a modest target of 107 runs, with concerns growing over the weather. New Zealand, on the other hand, will be hoping for more rain and bad light to disrupt India's bowling efforts, as they aim to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
