Actor Saif Ali Khan suffered multiple stab injuries in a burglary attempt at his Mumbai residence; the attacker has been apprehended by police
24-01-2025Actor Saif Ali Khan recorded his statement with the Bandra police after suffering injuries in an attack at his Mumbai residence on January 16. According to his account, he and his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, were in their bedroom on the 11th floor of the Satguru Sharan building when they were alerted by the screams of their younger son Jehangir's (Jeh) nanny.
Mr. Khan shared that he and Ms. Kapoor rushed to Jeh’s room, where they encountered the intruder. The nanny, Eliyama Philips, was panicking and shouting, while Jeh was crying. When Mr. Khan attempted to restrain the intruder, the assailant stabbed him multiple times on his back, neck, and hands. Despite his injuries, the actor managed to push the intruder into the room, allowing Ms. Philips to escape with Jeh and lock the attacker inside, police sources revealed.
At the time of the incident, Mr. Khan, Ms. Kapoor, and their two sons, Jeh and Taimur, were in the apartment. The intruder, who reportedly entered the building with the intent to burgle, allegedly demanded ₹1 crore from Ms. Philips, the police stated.
Following the attack, Mr. Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in the early hours of January 17, where he underwent surgery for spinal fluid leakage and received plastic surgeries for injuries to his arm and neck. After five days of treatment, he was discharged on January 21.
The attacker, identified as Sariful Islam, was arrested in Thane after a three-day search involving over 20 teams from the Mumbai Police. Investigators tracked him using a digital trail after he paid for breakfast via a Google Pay transaction, sources said.
Fingerprints matching Islam’s were found at multiple locations in the actor’s residence, including the stairs, a bathroom door, and the handle of Jeh’s room. These fingerprints have been sent for further analysis.
The 30-year-old suspect, who reportedly entered India illegally from Bangladesh in 2023, confessed to the crime during police questioning, stating, "Yes, I did it." However, his father, Md Ruhul Amin Fakir, denied his son’s involvement, claiming he had been wrongly implicated. Fakir asserted that the individual captured on CCTV did not resemble his son, adding that Islam had fled Bangladesh due to political unrest and was earning an honest living in India.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on verifying evidence and tracing the suspect’s activities leading up to the crime.
