Seven-Year-Old Ranchi Swimmer Ishank Singh Becomes Youngest to Conquer Palk Strait
Jharkhand’s Ishank Singh scripted history by completing the demanding Palk Strait swim between Sri Lanka and India in under 10 hours
01-05-2026In a remarkable display of endurance, seven-year-old Ishank Singh from Ranchi achieved a record-breaking feat on Friday by swimming across the Palk Strait, becoming the youngest person to accomplish the challenge.
The young swimmer covered the nearly 29-kilometre stretch separating Talaimannar in Sri Lanka from Arichalmunai in Dhanushkodi, India, in 9 hours and 50 minutes. Battling strong ocean currents, rolling waves and shifting weather conditions, Ishank entered the waters at 4 am and completed the crossing at 1:50 pm.
The Palk Strait is known for its unpredictable marine environment, making it one of the tougher open-water swims in the region. Despite these obstacles, the Class II student maintained steady pace and composure throughout the journey.
On reaching the shores near Rameswaram, Ishank was greeted by officials, well-wishers and supporters who celebrated his milestone achievement.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren congratulated the young athlete, calling him an exceptional talent and praising his dedication and perseverance. In a message posted on social media platform X, Soren said the achievement has made both the state and the nation proud.
Before Ishank’s accomplishment, the youngest swimmer to complete the crossing was Jay Jashwanth from Tamil Nadu, who achieved the feat in 10 hours and 30 minutes at the age of 10 in 2019.
