Sixteen engineers from Bihar's water resources department have been suspended following the collapse of 10 bridges across the state in the last 15 days, according to a department statement. Bihar Development Secretary Chaitanya Prasad emphasized the state government's commitment to addressing the issue, stating that the contractors responsible for the construction of the bridges will be identified and held accountable.
The latest incident involved a bridge in Saran district, marking the third collapse in that district within 24 hours. The other affected districts include Siwan, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj.
Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary informed reporters that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a comprehensive survey of all old bridges to identify those needing urgent repairs. An investigation into the collapses is ongoing.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that a total of 12 bridges have collapsed since June 18. He criticized both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for their silence on the matter and accused the state government of widespread corruption.
In response, the Bihar road construction department has developed a bridge maintenance policy and urged the rural works department to finalize its plan swiftly. Rural Works Department Minister Ashok Choudhary criticized Yadav for his alleged inaction during his previous tenure overseeing the portfolio for over 15 months, suggesting that the previous RJD-led government should also be held accountable for the current issues.
