NASA astronaut Sunita Williams celebrated her 59th birthday in a remarkable location – aboard the International Space Station (ISS), orbiting 400 kilometers above Earth. This is the second time Williams has marked her birthday in space, her first being during a mission in 2012.
Williams has been aboard the ISS since June 6, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, as part of the Boeing Crew Flight Test mission. Initially set for a shorter duration, their stay has been extended until February 2025 due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.
Despite the prolonged mission, the crew continues essential scientific research and maintenance tasks. On the eve of her birthday, Williams and Wilmore reviewed systems for the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, which will eventually return them to Earth. Williams also took on maintenance duties, inspecting smoke detectors and reconfiguring a radiation detector—critical tasks for the safety of the ISS.
Wilmore, on the other hand, tested the Sphere Camera-2 to assess its ability to capture high-resolution images in space, a tool with potential for future missions.
Although the ISS crew is busy, Williams' accomplishments, particularly her extended stay, continue to inspire future generations of space explorers and scientists.
