The Supreme Court’s recent directive to move all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR to designated shelters within eight weeks has triggered intense public outcry and street demonstrations. On Tuesday, police detained several animal welfare activists at India Gate after they attempted to resist the relocation drive. Authorities have cautioned that any obstruction of the court’s order could amount to contempt.
The ambitious plan, however, is already facing steep logistical hurdles. With more than three lakh strays in the region, authorities will require vast tracts of land, extensive infrastructure, veterinary facilities, and trained personnel to manage their care. Estimates suggest the upkeep of each dog could cost around ₹5,000 per month, prompting concerns over how the government will secure sustained funding.
Inspections have also revealed that some existing shelters in Delhi are under-equipped and not operating at full capacity, raising doubts about the readiness to accommodate such a large influx of animals.
The order has drawn mixed political reactions, with some leaders questioning its feasibility while others back it as a step toward public safety. For now, the fate of Delhi’s street dogs hangs in the balance as the countdown to the eight-week deadline begins.
