18-01-2025A suspect linked to the recent attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was detained in Chhattisgarh's Durg district on Saturday. Acting on information from Mumbai Police, the Chhattisgarh Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted the suspect aboard the Gyaneshwari Express. A Mumbai Police team is en route to Durg to interrogate the individual.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Aakash Kailash Kannojia, was apprehended after his photo and location details were shared by Mumbai Police. According to Sanjeev Sinha, RPF in-charge at Durg, the man was located in a general compartment of the train and detained after his identity was confirmed via a video call with Mumbai Police officials.
During preliminary questioning, Kannojia claimed to be a resident of Mumbai's Colaba area and stated he was traveling to Bilaspur to visit a relative. Authorities noted that he was traveling without a ticket. Final confirmation of his involvement in the case will be made once Mumbai Police reaches Chhattisgarh. The team is expected to arrive in Raipur by flight and proceed to Durg by the evening to take custody of the suspect.
Earlier in the day, another individual was detained in Madhya Pradesh, sparking speculation about his connection to the case. However, officials clarified that the detention was related to an unrelated matter.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 16, during a burglary attempt at Saif Ali Khan's residence in Bandra, Mumbai. The 54-year-old actor suffered multiple stab injuries, including wounds to his neck and spine, while confronting the intruder who had entered the room of his younger son, Jehangir (Jeh).
Saif was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors have since confirmed that the actor is out of danger and recovering well.
The attacker, who fled the scene, was captured on CCTV footage hours after the incident. In one clip, he was seen purchasing headphones at a shop in Dadar. Mumbai Police suspect he used a train from Bandra to move around the city or escape. Multiple police teams are currently reviewing CCTV footage from railway stations to trace his movements.
Doctors treating Saif Ali Khan at Lilavati Hospital have reported significant progress in his recovery. Initially admitted to the ICU, the actor was moved to the general ward on Saturday. According to Dr. Nitin Dange, a neurosurgeon at the hospital, Saif is responding well to treatment, walking unaided, and on a normal diet.
“If his recovery continues at this pace, we anticipate discharging him in two to three days,” Dr. Dange said.
The police investigation remains in full swing, with over 50 hours having passed since the attack. Kareena Kapoor Khan, who also provided her statement to the police, said that while the intruder became aggressive during the confrontation, no valuables were taken. Authorities remain committed to apprehending the main suspect and ensuring justice is served.
