West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has called for preparation as he anticipates over 1 crore Bangladeshi Hindus might seek refuge in India following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from Bangladesh.
"Hindu minorities are being targeted in Bangladesh. The councillor of Rangpur was killed, and in Sirajganj, 13 policemen, nine of whom were Hindus, were killed. Be ready for 1 crore Bangladeshi Hindus to come to Bengal," Adhikari stated during a media interaction on Monday.
The Leader of Opposition in Bengal also urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor CV Ananda Bose to engage with the Centre on this pressing issue.
This call to action follows the unrest in Bangladesh, where four people died in Rangpur in recent clashes, including Haradhan Roy, president of the Parshuram Thana Awami League and a ward councillor, according to the Daily Star.
Bangladesh has been engulfed in turmoil for weeks, with students protesting against a government job quota system. The situation escalated into a political crisis, culminating in Sheikh Hasina stepping down as Prime Minister.
Hasina's flight landed at the Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad, where she was received by Air Officer Commanding Sanjay Chopra. Speculation suggests she may travel to London next.
Following reports of her resignation and departure, thousands of protesters stormed her residence in Bangladesh, vandalizing the statue of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
