Renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, celebrated worldwide for his mastery and innovation in Indian classical music, passed away on Monday at the age of 73 in San Francisco due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease.

Hussain had been admitted to a hospital for two weeks, with his condition worsening in recent days. Initial reports of his death surfaced on Sunday but were dismissed by his family. On Monday morning, his family released a statement confirming the news, saying, "Zakir Hussain, one of the world’s most transcendent musicians, has passed away in San Francisco at the age of 73. His extraordinary legacy will continue to inspire countless music lovers for generations."

The Indian Consulate in San Francisco expressed its condolences, calling Hussain a "true legend whose legacy will live on through his music and the lives he touched."

Zakir Hussain, the eldest son of legendary tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha, elevated the tabla to global prominence. A child prodigy, he established a career spanning six decades, earning widespread acclaim both in India and abroad. He was a five-time Grammy Award winner, including three awards at the 66th Grammys earlier this year.

Recognized for his unparalleled contributions to music, Hussain was conferred with several prestigious Indian honors, including the Padma Shri (1988), Padma Bhushan (2002), and Padma Vibhushan (2023).

Throughout his illustrious career, Hussain collaborated with many iconic artists across genres. His groundbreaking work in the 1973 fusion project Shakti, alongside English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist T.H. Vinayakram, blended Indian classical music with jazz elements, creating a genre-defying sound that captivated global audiences.

Tributes poured in from across the world following his passing. Political leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Nitin Gadkari, and Mallikarjun Kharge, along with industrialists Gautam Adani and Anand Mahindra, expressed their condolences on social media. Celebrities, musicians, and fans also paid homage to the maestro, celebrating his monumental contribution to music and his enduring legacy.

Zakir Hussain’s remarkable journey has left an indelible mark on the world of music, ensuring that his legacy as a tabla legend will continue to resonate for generations.
