Tamil Nadu Closes Schools and Colleges in Four Districts Amid Heavy Rain Forecast
Tamil Nadu has ordered the closure of schools and colleges in four districts and advised IT employees to work from home due to heavy rain predictions
15-10-2024In response to heavy rain predictions, the Tamil Nadu government has directed schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts to remain closed on Tuesday, October 15. Chief Minister MK Stalin has also advised IT companies in these districts to allow employees to work from home until October 18.
The District Magistrates of these regions have stated that they are fully prepared to manage the potential impact of flooding due to the downpour.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Tamil Nadu is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days, particularly from October 14-15. "Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from October 12-16, with an orange alert issued for October 14-16," the IMD reported.
The IMD has also confirmed that a low-pressure area developed over the southeast Bay of Bengal early Monday morning. This system is likely to intensify and move northwest towards northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh in the next two days.
Chief Minister MK Stalin held a meeting on Monday to assess monsoon preparedness. During the meeting, the Chennai Corporation Commissioner reported that 990 pumps, 57 tractors with pump sets, 36 motorboats, and necessary supplies like bleach powder, lime powder, and phenol are on standby to address flood-related issues.
Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin conducted inspections of Narayanapuram Lake and Ambedkar Road canals on Monday, ahead of the predicted heavy rains. He shared updates on social media, stating that a survey was conducted along Narayanapuram Lake to monitor flood-prevention efforts.
