Tears and Triumph: Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s Emotional Reunion After Historic ISS Mission
India's latest space hero Shubhanshu Shukla reunites with his family after becoming the first Indian to board the International Space Station
17-07-2025Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently became the first Indian to board the International Space Station (ISS), shared an emotional reunion with his family following his return from an 18-day space mission. The touching moments, captured in photographs and widely shared, have struck a chord across the nation.
After a successful splashdown in the Pacific Ocean aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, Shukla arrived at a recovery facility in Houston for standard health evaluations. It was there, on the tarmac, that he embraced his wife Kamna, who wept tears of joy as they met for the first time in nearly two months.
Their four-year-old son, who had accompanied Kamna to the United States, also ran into his father’s arms—ending a long separation that began with a pre-flight quarantine lasting over a month.
Shukla’s journey marks a historic milestone: he is now the first Indian to reach the ISS and only the second Indian ever in space, following Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma’s iconic 1984 flight.
Affectionately called "Shux" by fellow crew members, Shukla undocked from the ISS on Monday afternoon (IST), wrapping up a 22-hour return journey to Earth.
During his mission, he contributed to a range of global research projects, including pioneering work in plant biology under the "Sprouts Project." This experiment on vegetation growth in microgravity may pave the way for sustainable space agriculture, a critical need for future deep-space exploration.
