The Hindu community in Bangladesh is facing rising tensions as their most significant festival, Durga Puja, approaches. Radical Islamic groups have been actively opposing the public celebration of the festival and the accompanying nationwide holidays.

Recently, a demonstration led by extremist groups took place in Dhaka’s Sector 13, protesting the use of a local playground for Durga Puja celebrations, a venue traditionally used by Hindus for years. The organization Insaf Keemkari Chhatra-Janta led the march, carrying placards in Bangla that denounced public worship, road closures, and idol immersions, citing environmental and social concerns.

The group presented a list of 16 demands, which included restrictions on public religious practices, such as barring road closures for religious events and preventing government relief funds from being allocated for festival-related expenses. They argued that since Hindus comprise less than two percent of the population, Durga Puja should not merit public holidays, as it inconveniences the Muslim majority. Additionally, the group insisted that no Muslims should support or be involved in Hindu festivals due to religious reasons.

Among their demands was the removal of temples built on what they claimed were illegally occupied lands. The group also expressed anti-India sentiments, demanding that Hindu citizens of Bangladesh adopt an anti-India stance and display anti-India banners in temples.

These developments have caused growing concern among Bangladesh’s Hindu community, which is preparing for Durga Puja amid heightened tensions. Reports of attacks on temples and destruction of idols, particularly in regions like Khulna, have contributed to the anxiety. The interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has promised increased security for the community, but many remain worried about the festival's safety.

Despite these challenges, the Hindu community is determined to move forward with their Durga Puja celebrations, though they are now doing so under significant pressure and uncertainty.
