Three spectators lost their lives and 230 others were hospitalized due to dehydration during an air show in Chennai, held in celebration of the Indian Air Force's 92nd anniversary. The event, meant to showcase the IAF’s aerial capabilities, turned tragic as the intense heat and overcrowding overwhelmed attendees, according to official reports.

The deceased were identified as Srinivasan (48) from Perungalathur, Karthikeyan (34) from Thiruvottiyur, and John (56) from Korukkuppet.

The air show, which aimed to gather a record crowd of 16 lakh people and enter the Limca Book of Records, began at 11 a.m. and lasted until 1 p.m. However, by 8 a.m., thousands of spectators had already gathered at Marina Beach, enduring the harsh sun in hopes of securing a good view. Many elderly attendees fainted from heat exhaustion even before the show started. Unfortunately, the situation worsened when nearby water vendors were removed, leaving the crowd without access to drinking water.

As the event concluded, the overwhelming number of spectators attempting to leave at once led to severe traffic congestion on Kamarajar Salai, leaving many stranded. Exhausted by the heat and blocked roads, numerous people were forced to rest along the roadside. Nearby residents stepped in to provide drinking water to those in need, while metro stations became overcrowded with attendees searching for alternative ways to get home.

The tragic incident sparked political reactions. Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K. Annamalai expressed shock, blaming the ruling DMK government for its failure to ensure basic safety and transportation arrangements. He criticized Chief Minister MK Stalin for prioritizing political promotion over public safety, stating that the deaths should not be dismissed as accidental and demanding accountability.

AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami also voiced his grief and anger, offering condolences to the victims' families. He condemned the state government’s mismanagement, stating that proper security measures were lacking for an event of this scale.

The chaos has led to widespread public outcry, with many criticizing the lack of planning and preparedness by authorities. Comparisons were drawn to the cancellation of actor Vijay’s public event due to crowd management concerns, raising questions about the poor arrangements made for the air show.
