US President Donald Trump on Sunday praised Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, describing them as “great people,” while pledging to swiftly bring peace between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Trump made the remarks during the signing ceremony of the Thailand–Cambodia peace accord, held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Highlighting his administration’s peace efforts, Trump said, “We’ve ended eight wars in eight months. That’s one per month. Only one remains — I’ve heard Pakistan and Afghanistan have flared up again. But we’ll settle that very quickly. I know them both well. The Field Marshal and the Prime Minister are great people, and we’ll get it done fast.”

The US President added that conflict resolution was one of the causes he valued most. “If I can save millions of lives through dialogue, that’s worth my time. I can’t think of anything more meaningful,” he said.

Trump went on to describe his administration’s record as “historic,” claiming no other US president had resolved so many conflicts. “I don’t know any President who’s ended even one war — they start them, they don’t solve them,” he said while referring to the Thailand–Cambodia peace deal as “a proud moment” for the United States.

Earlier this month, Trump had recalled Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Washington, where Sharif praised him for “saving millions of lives” by helping de-escalate the India–Pakistan confrontation earlier this year.

The brief conflict between India and Pakistan broke out in April following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. India launched “Operation Sindoor,” targeting militant bases across the border, before the fighting halted after four days. India has maintained that no third-party mediation was involved in the ceasefire agreement.

At the Gaza Peace Summit in Egypt, Sharif had publicly credited Trump for preventing a full-scale war, suggesting the US President “deserved a Nobel Peace Prize” for his peace efforts in South Asia. Trump later called Sharif’s comments “beautiful,” adding that “there’s nothing more to say.”

Meanwhile, officials from Pakistan and Afghanistan are continuing dialogue to defuse border tensions and address terrorism concerns. The two sides met in Doha on October 19 in talks brokered by Qatar and Turkey and are scheduled to hold a follow-up meeting in Istanbul to pursue a longer-term peace framework.
