US President Donald Trump has once again heaped praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “great man” who “loves Trump.” The President, however, quickly added that he didn’t want his comments to be “taken the wrong way” or “hurt Modi’s political career.”

Trump’s remarks came while speaking to reporters at the White House, where he claimed that Prime Minister Modi had assured him India would stop importing oil from Russia — a move he called a “big win” for his administration’s efforts to pressure Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

“Modi Is A Great Man, A Friend”

Responding to a question about PM Modi’s recent meeting with US envoy-designate Sergio Gor in New Delhi, Trump said, “He’s a great man. Modi is a great man. He loves Trump. Now, I don’t know if we should use the word love — I don’t want that taken differently, or to destroy his political career.”

The President added, “I’ve followed India for years. It’s an incredible country. You used to see new leaders every few months, but my friend Modi has brought stability and strong leadership. He’s been there a long time, and he assured me there will be no oil purchases from Russia.”

Meeting With US Envoy-Designate

The comments came days after Prime Minister Modi met with Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador-designate, in New Delhi on October 11. During their meeting, Gor reportedly presented the Prime Minister with a framed photo taken at the White House, signed by President Trump with a message that read, “Mr Prime Minister, you are great.”

The meeting took place amid a gradual thaw in India–US relations, which had been strained after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods earlier this year. The tariffs were a response to India’s continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil despite US pressure to halt such imports.

India has defended its energy policy, arguing that affordable oil is essential for a country of 1.4 billion people. Though recent talks have softened tensions, the issue remains unresolved.

“India Will Halt Russian Oil Imports,” Says Trump

Reiterating his stance during the media interaction, President Trump said, “We weren’t happy that India was buying oil from Russia. That money was helping Moscow sustain a war that’s cost them one and a half million lives. But Modi assured me they’ll stop doing that. That’s a big step. Now, we just need China to do the same.”

As of now, there has been no official response from the Indian government to Trump’s statement or his claim about Modi’s assurance.
