In a dramatic turn on social media, US President Donald Trump shared — and later deleted — an AI-generated image that showed him styled as a figure resembling Jesus Christ, shortly after launching sharp remarks against Pope Leo XIV.
The image depicted Trump clothed in flowing robes, illuminated by radiant light, and appearing to heal a kneeling man. Figures resembling angels or armed guards stood beside him. The post was removed within hours, but not before triggering widespread online debate.
The upload followed Trump’s pointed criticism of the Pope’s leadership and political outlook. Speaking to reporters while travelling back to Washington from Florida, Trump described the pontiff as “weak” and overly liberal. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the Pope’s positions on global security matters.
Tensions appeared to intensify after the Pope warned that what he described as a “delusion of omnipotence” was contributing to the ongoing US-Israel conflict involving Iran. Although no individual leader was named, Trump interpreted the remarks as directed at American leadership. In response, he accused the Pope of poor judgement in foreign affairs and of being lenient on major international threats.
Trump further argued that he did not support religious leadership that, in his view, fails to take a firm stand against nuclear risks. He also criticised the Vatican’s broader commentary on American foreign policy decisions, including past actions related to Venezuela and President Nicolás Maduro.
In a separate post, Trump suggested that the Pope’s elevation was influenced by US political dynamics and urged him to focus on spiritual leadership rather than what he characterised as partisan positions.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV recently led prayers at St Peter's Basilica, reiterating his consistent stance against war. He stated that divine support does not align with those who promote conflict and described threats of large-scale destruction as unacceptable.
Online Backlash Over AI Image
The digitally altered image quickly drew intense reactions across social media platforms. Some users claimed that the man portrayed as being healed bore resemblance to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, amplifying controversy around the post.
Among public commentators, British broadcaster Piers Morgan observed that even some of Trump’s usual supporters appeared uncomfortable with the imagery.
Online responses ranged from ridicule to criticism, with many questioning the intent and symbolism behind the post. The episode added another layer of political and cultural friction amid already heightened rhetoric between the White House and the Vatican.
