The British government has urged the United Nations to lead an investigation into the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, which culminated in the resignation and departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the UK's desire for a "peaceful and democratic future" for Bangladesh, while notably not addressing the possibility of asylum for Hasina.
"The people of Bangladesh deserve a full and independent UN-led investigation into the events of the past few weeks," Lammy stated. "The UK wants to see action taken to ensure Bangladesh a peaceful and democratic future. The UK and Bangladesh have deep people-to-people links and shared Commonwealth values."
Lammy highlighted the "unprecedented levels of violence and tragic loss of life" witnessed over the past two weeks in Bangladesh. He acknowledged the transitional period announced by the Chief of the Army Staff, urging all parties to collaborate to end the violence, restore calm, and prevent further casualties.
The UK remains committed to supporting Bangladesh through this challenging period, advocating for a thorough and impartial inquiry into the recent events to pave the way for stability and democracy in the nation.
