For the first time since 1947, Vande Mataram was rendered at the Red Fort during India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the historic moment.

The national song became a central part of the Independence Day ceremony as the country marked 150 years since Vande Mataram was written. Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, PM Modi spoke about the deep emotional and patriotic significance the song continues to hold for Indians.

Modi said the occasion was particularly meaningful because Independence Day provided the right setting to commemorate the song’s enduring place in India’s national consciousness. The rendition of Vande Mataram at the historic venue, he said, reflected the spirit of patriotism associated with the song.

The Prime Minister also drew attention to the widespread presence of the Tricolour across the country. He said the national flag was no longer limited to official ceremonies, but had become a symbol carried with pride in homes and reflected in the emotions of citizens.

The historic rendition added another significant element to this year’s Independence Day celebrations, linking the country’s freedom struggle, its national symbols and the continuing emotional resonance of Vande Mataram.
