The divorce proceedings involving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay came to a close on Friday after his wife, Sangeetha Sornalingam, officially withdrew the petition she had filed earlier this year.

Sangeetha participated in the hearing through video conferencing and informed the family court in Chengalpattu that she no longer wished to pursue the case. After recording her submission, the court formally disposed of the matter.

The petition had originally been filed in February 2026, with Sangeetha seeking dissolution of her marriage. In her plea, she had cited irreconcilable differences between the couple and had also sought permanent alimony along with permission to continue residing at the family's Neelankarai residence in Chennai.

The case witnessed several adjournments over the past few months. During a hearing in June, Sangeetha had already indicated her intention to withdraw the petition, prompting the court to defer the matter to August 7 for final consideration.

Proceedings were also postponed last month after neither Vijay nor Sangeetha appeared before the court. On multiple earlier occasions, both had been represented through their respective legal counsel, who informed the court about their inability to attend the hearings personally.

With Friday's order, the family court has formally closed the proceedings.

Vijay and Sangeetha married on August 25, 1999, in Chennai in a traditional Hindu ceremony despite belonging to different faiths. They have two children—a son born in 2000 and a daughter born in 2005.

Speculation surrounding their relationship first surfaced in 2023 after Sangeetha was absent from several important public appearances involving Vijay. Although such reports were dismissed at the time, the rumours resurfaced in 2025 when she skipped major Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam events, including the party's second state conference.

Meanwhile, Vijay has undergone a major political transformation. Under his leadership, TVK emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. The party later formed a coalition government with the support of the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, paving the way for Tamil Nadu's first coalition government in several decades.
