The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has accepted wrestler Vinesh Phogat's appeal against her disqualification from the Olympic Games and scheduled a hearing for 10 a.m. local time in Paris today. Vinesh was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle final for being 100 grams over the weight limit during the weigh-in.
Phogat, who had earlier announced her retirement following the disqualification, sought the CAS's intervention, challenging the decision. The appeal process began after the CAS received her plea at 3 p.m. Paris time, and the Indian government quickly moved to appoint renowned lawyer Harish Salve to represent her.
The CAS granted the Indian side until 9:30 p.m. IST on Thursday to finalize legal representation, after which Salve was confirmed to appear virtually for the Indian Olympic Association at the hearing.
Vinesh, 29, made two appeals to the CAS: one to participate in Thursday's final and another for a joint silver medal. While her request to compete in the final was denied, her second appeal is under consideration. Phogat's disqualification came after a series of remarkable victories, including a win over Japan’s defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki. Despite her performance, the weight discrepancy ended her Olympic campaign prematurely.
