VK Pandian, a close aide to former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, declared on Sunday his decision to withdraw from active politics. This announcement follows the recent defeat of Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in the Odisha Assembly elections.

"Consciously, I decide to withdraw myself from active politics. I apologize if I have hurt anyone during this journey. I regret if the campaign narrative against me contributed to BJD's loss," Pandian stated.

Pandian, widely held responsible by BJD members for the party's poor performance in both the Lok Sabha and Odisha Assembly elections, shared his thoughts in a video message on Sunday. Reflecting on his humble beginnings, he said, "I come from a small village and a modest family. My dream was to join the IAS and serve the people, a dream fulfilled with Lord Jagannath's blessing. From the moment I arrived in Odisha, I have received immense love and respect from its people, and I have strived to work hard for them."

Having joined the Odisha Chief Minister's Office 12 years ago, Pandian expressed it was an "honor" to work alongside Naveen Patnaik. "The experience and learning I gained from him are invaluable. His vision for Odisha included significant milestones in health, education, and poverty reduction," he noted.

Pandian, who took voluntary retirement to support Patnaik by joining the BJD, emphasized his intent was purely to assist his mentor. "I want to clarify certain perceptions. It may be my shortcoming that I couldn't effectively counter some political narratives timely," he admitted.

Reiterating his dedication, Pandian said, "I entered politics solely to support Naveen Patnaik during a challenging election. I had no ambitions for a specific political position or power, neither was I a candidate nor held any post in the BJD."

The elections in Odisha saw the BJP targeting Pandian, accusing him of wielding undue influence over Patnaik. Despite being considered Patnaik's potential successor, both denied such claims. The BJP alleged that Pandian, originally from Tamil Nadu, was usurping power from Odisha's longest-serving Chief Minister.

In response, Pandian highlighted his unwavering focus on Odisha and Patnaik. "I have worked tirelessly for 12 years, with Odisha and Naveen Babu at the forefront. The only property I own is what I inherited from my grandparents. My greatest reward has been the love and goodwill of the people of Odisha," he affirmed.

Pandian concluded by reaffirming his intent to step back from politics. "I apologize if my actions have hurt anyone or contributed to the BJD's loss. I apologize to the entire Biju family. Odisha will always remain in my heart, and I will continue to hold Naveen Babu in high regard, praying to Lord Jagannath for their well-being and prosperity," he concluded.
