01-08-2024Kerala's Wayanad district has been struck by devastating landslides, resulting in at least 256 deaths and over 200 injuries, according to Health Minister Veena George. The landslides, triggered by heavy rains, hit the hilly areas near Meppadi on Tuesday, with Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages being the hardest hit.
Rescue operations, now on their third day, have seen the Army rescue approximately 1,000 people, with 220 still missing. A Command and Control Centre has been established in Kozhikode to coordinate Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts, with around 1,500 Army personnel and forensic surgeons deployed.
Relief and Rescue Efforts: The Army is constructing a temporary Bailey bridge in Chooralmala, and an Indian Air Force plane has delivered a 110-foot Bailey bridge and three search and rescue dog teams to Kannur to support the ongoing operations. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has indicated that rescued individuals will be moved from temporary camps once the Bailey bridge is completed. He stressed the importance of adhering to health department guidelines to prevent the spread of contagious diseases.
Mental Health and Infrastructure: Thousands of displaced people are being housed in relief camps, with efforts focused on providing psychological support and managing health risks. Kerala Health Minister Veena George noted the trauma experienced by many and emphasized the need for controlling contagious diseases.
Political and International Reactions: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited the affected site in Chooralmala. Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan highlighted the strong cooperation between central and state agencies in the response efforts. Internationally, condolences have been extended by countries including the US, Russia, China, and Iran.
Weather and Alerts: The Indian Meteorological Department has forecasted continued heavy rainfall for Wayanad and other districts, with a red alert issued for Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod. NDRF personnel have warned of potential further landslides due to ongoing rain.
