Social media platform X announced on Saturday that it is shutting down its operations in Brazil "effective immediately," citing "censorship orders" from Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes as the reason for the decision.

X alleges that Moraes secretly threatened one of its legal representatives in Brazil with arrest if the platform did not comply with orders to remove specific content. The Supreme Court of Brazil, where Moraes is a sitting justice, has yet to respond to these claims.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, addressed the situation on the platform, stating, "The decision to close the office in Brazil was difficult, but if we had agreed to @alexandre’s (illegal) secret censorship and private information handover demands, there was no way we could explain our actions without being ashamed."

Moraes, who serves as both a justice on Brazil's Supreme Federal Court and the president of the Superior Electoral Court, has not commented on the allegations. Despite the office closure, X's service remains accessible to users in Brazil.
