Yellow Alert Issued for Seven Kerala Districts Amid 11 Rain-Related Deaths
Kerala braces for heavy rainfall with a yellow alert in place for seven districts, as local authorities and disaster response teams remain on high alert
25-05-2024The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for seven districts in Kerala for Saturday, predicting continued heavy rainfall in the region.
This yellow alert affects Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargod, with expected rainfall ranging from 6 cm to 11 cm.
State Revenue Minister K. Rajan reported that Kerala experienced at least 11 rain-related fatalities between May 9 and May 23. These incidents included six drownings, two accidents in quarries, two lightning strikes, and one house collapse.
The minister mentioned that the intensity of rainfall is expected to decrease slightly after Saturday. He advised people to steer clear of water bodies and coastal areas, stressing the importance of keeping children away from these areas during the holiday season.
Local authorities, including the Fire Department, police, and Revenue Department, are on high alert to manage any emergencies. Additionally, two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in the state.
As of Friday evening, eight relief camps have been set up, providing shelter to 223 people across the state.
