Founded in August 2023 by Suveer Passi, a student at Wellington College, UK, Youth for Elders is a heartfelt social initiative dedicated to improving the lives of abandoned elderly individuals in India. Inspired by his close bond with his late grandfather and his experience witnessing dementia firsthand, Suveer has taken meaningful steps to bring comfort and dignity to senior citizens.
Partnering with SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) in New Delhi, Youth for Elders focuses on enhancing infrastructure, healthcare, and recreational facilities for elderly residents. During a visit to SHEOWS, Suveer observed that a small, outdated television was the only entertainment source for over 80 residents. Determined to improve their daily experience, he launched a crowdfunding campaign that successfully provided a 75-inch television. Now, residents can enjoy their favorite programs and sports matches on a large screen in a peaceful outdoor setting.
Healthcare is another major area of focus. In November 2023, Youth for Elders collaborated with the AK Institute of Ophthalmology to conduct eye camps, offering free check-ups, eyeglasses, and cataract surgeries to those in need.
Recognizing additional concerns, Suveer conducted a survey to identify pressing issues at the care home. The feedback highlighted the urgent need for cleaner and more private bathrooms. In response, Youth for Elders partnered with Tata Chemicals’ CSR division in March 2024 to renovate the bathing facilities, significantly improving hygiene and safety. Suveer credited Mr. Ratan Tata, whom he considers a mentor, for his invaluable guidance in shaping the project.
The inauguration of the upgraded facilities was attended by a German delegation led by MP Rahul Kumar, who praised the initiative’s impactful and forward-thinking approach. He also acknowledged Suveer’s family for their support and expressed admiration for his commitment to the cause.
In August 2024, Youth for Elders introduced Words for Elders, a specially designed activity book aimed at promoting cognitive engagement among seniors. Inspired by the idea that the elderly, much like children, benefit from mental stimulation, Suveer curated a collection of puzzles, brain exercises, and dexterity activities. The first 20 copies were distributed at SHEOWS, and plans are underway to expand the initiative with a Books for Elders Library Installation—a dedicated reading space stocked with Hindi and English literature, along with additional copies of Words for Elders.
To broaden awareness and support, Suveer also envisions launching a podcast series featuring medical experts discussing key issues such as dementia, stress, and loneliness. Through these discussions, he hopes to shed light on the challenges faced by seniors while offering valuable insights on elderly care.
Youth for Elders has received widespread recognition as an inspiring example of how young individuals can drive meaningful change. Suveer’s initiative not only uplifts abandoned seniors but also highlights the power of youth-led action in transforming lives.
