18-12-2024At least 13 people, including three Navy personnel and 10 civilians, were killed when a boat carrying 110 passengers capsized off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday. The incident occurred when a Navy speedboat collided with the boat, named Neelkamal, which was ferrying passengers from the Elephanta Islands to the Gateway of India.
Out of the 108 survivors, four are reported to be in critical condition, while authorities continue to search for several missing individuals. The Navy stated that the speedboat, a rigid inflatable boat (RIB), was undergoing engine trials when it lost control due to a malfunction.
Video footage from the scene, recorded by a passenger, shows the speedboat circling the Neelkamal before crashing into it, causing chaos as passengers wearing life jackets were rescued and transferred to another ferry.
A large-scale search operation is ongoing, with 11 Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, and one Coast Guard boat deployed in the area. Four helicopters, along with assistance from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and local fishermen, are also part of the rescue efforts. Authorities are continuing their operations to locate those still missing.
