In Delhi, nearly 20 people have lost their lives over the past two months due to severe waterlogging, with fatalities resulting from both drowning and electrocution. Among the victims are at least six children aged between 3 and 10 years.
Data reveals that 11 deaths were due to drowning, while seven were caused by electrocution. Notably, three UPSC aspirants—Tania Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Navin Delvin (28)—drowned in the waterlogged basement of Rau's IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar.
Electrocution cases mostly involved adults. Two of these fatalities occurred when individuals came into contact with live wires following water accumulation outside their homes.
On Saturday, a 7-year-old boy drowned in a waterlogged park in Delhi's Rohini while playing with friends. Additionally, a 13-year-old boy in outer Delhi's Ranhola area was electrocuted after touching an iron pole with a live wire at a cricket ground.
Two teenage boys, both 15, drowned in stagnant water in a vacant plot in Prem Nagar on Saturday. They had reportedly gone to bathe but were found dead later. An FIR has been filed against unknown parties due to negligence.
Previously, a 26-year-old UPSC aspirant, Nilesh Rai, was electrocuted near Patel Nagar metro station three weeks ago.
The increasing number of such incidents highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure and safety measures in the city.
