Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has strongly condemned the attack on him in Sonarpur, describing the incident as an example of growing political hostility and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Banerjee visited the residence of a deceased party worker, Sanju Karmakar, in Sonarpur. He reportedly sustained minor injuries to his face, neck, chest and back during the altercation. Police later arrested six individuals in connection with the attack. According to reports, the accused were previously associated with former TMC MLA Lovely Maitra, fuelling speculation about possible factional tensions within the party following recent electoral setbacks.
Reacting to a message of support from Rahul Gandhi, Banerjee thanked the Congress leader and said the opposition remained united in defending democratic values and constitutional principles.
In a strongly worded statement, Banerjee said he had represented India internationally as part of a multi-party delegation during Operation Sindoor and had consistently spoken in support of the nation’s interests. He contrasted that role with his current situation, claiming he had become a target of political violence because of his opposition to the ruling BJP.
The TMC leader alleged that those who support the BJP are celebrated, while critics are subjected to intimidation and attacks. He maintained that he would continue speaking out in defence of democracy and would not compromise his principles for political convenience.
Banerjee further stated that political power is temporary, whereas the mandate of the people remains supreme. He asserted that his allegiance lies with the public and not with those occupying positions of authority.
Reiterating his commitment to the opposition alliance, he said efforts to weaken democratic institutions or create divisions within the country would be resisted collectively. He added that forces promoting fear, hatred and political violence would ultimately be challenged through democratic means.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had condemned the attack, calling it unacceptable and harmful to democratic values. He argued that violence against an elected representative amounts to an attack on the citizens who entrusted that individual with public office.
The Congress leader also criticised what he described as a politics of retaliation and stressed that ideological differences should never be settled through violence. He urged both the central and West Bengal governments to take swift action against those responsible and ensure the safety of public representatives regardless of political affiliation.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee alleged that the attack was part of a larger conspiracy and promised strict legal action against those involved. The incident has intensified political tensions in West Bengal, with rival parties exchanging accusations over responsibility and motive.
