Artificial intelligence is no longer just an innovation tool at Accenture — it is becoming a career requirement. After laying off around 11,000 employees in recent restructuring efforts, the company has reportedly informed senior staff that future promotions will depend on how actively they use AI in their roles.

According to reports, associate directors and senior managers have been told that consistent adoption of AI tools will be essential for elevation into leadership positions. Employees who fail to integrate AI into their workflows may find advancement opportunities limited.

The move reflects Accenture’s intensified focus on AI-driven transformation. Speaking at the India AI Impact Summit, CEO Julie Sweet said organisations must fundamentally rethink how work gets done, urging companies to redesign processes and invest in reshaping their workforce for an AI-centric future.

In recent years, Accenture has spent roughly $2 billion on severance packages as part of workforce restructuring, citing difficulties in reskilling certain roles for emerging AI demands.

Part of a Larger Industry Trend

Accenture’s stance mirrors actions taken by other technology giants. In 2025, Microsoft informed employees that AI adoption was mandatory, with usage factored into performance reviews. CEO Satya Nadella has emphasised the importance of aligning with the company’s AI-first strategy.

Similarly, Google has encouraged staff to fully embrace AI tools, with CEO Sundar Pichai previously warning that those who lag in AI adoption risk being left behind. Meta has also reportedly begun monitoring internal AI engagement metrics.

The broader IT sector has witnessed over 100,000 layoffs in the past year across companies including Amazon, TCS, Infosys and Accenture. Many firms are betting that AI can enhance productivity while reducing workforce size, and internal AI mandates appear designed to accelerate that transition.

Tracking AI Adoption

To implement the new policy, Accenture is expected to monitor employee interaction with its proprietary platforms, including AI Refinery — a system developed in partnership with NVIDIA. By analysing usage data and login activity, the company can assess who is actively incorporating AI into their daily responsibilities.

However, the requirement does not apply universally. Staff in certain European countries and those working on US government contracts are reportedly exempt due to regulatory and contractual constraints. It remains uncertain whether similar expectations will extend to entry-level employees in the future.

The message from Accenture — and much of the tech industry — is increasingly clear: in a post-layoff landscape shaped by automation, AI proficiency is quickly becoming a gateway to leadership rather than an optional skill.
